Sonible smart:comp Review – Best Compressor Plugin For 2019?

In this blog post I would to share with you an honest and hands-on sonible smart:comp review. I'll include a video below to find out if the smart comp is the best compressor plugin for 2019.

The goal of this new compressor is to help you find the perfect parameter settings for your sounds in a few seconds and it ensures unparalleled transparency through frequency-selective processing.

Balance is one of the most important things that separates professional and amateur mixes. That's why a compressor is really important during mixing.

So smart comp is really unique because it's a spectro-dynamic compressor.

It will analyze the input signal of your sounds across more than 2000 bands, that means it acts like an intelligent multiband compressor that dynamically smoothes out tonal imbalances.

Unlike ordinary compressors, smart:comp's spectral compression only applies compression where it is needed to ensure a consistent tonal and dynamic balance at all times.

It uses machine learning, so with just one-click the plugin will analyze the incoming audio signal then set specific parameters that result in well-balanced compression.

Behind the intuitive interface, runs the smart:engine – an A.I. based, content-aware system which is designed on the basis of psychoacoustic principles and extensive hands-on mixing experience.

It gives you a good starting point, then from there you can adjust things according to taste. smart:comp is an invaluable assistant – whether you're a mastering/mixing professional or an aspiring talent.

Even though machine learning is nothing new, even Izotope Neutron does offer artificial intelligence assistant, the smart:comp just took it to the next level. Let's check out some of its features.

Features

  • Tonal and Dynamic Balance - You don't only get to control the dynamic range of an audio signal but you also get spectral compression to control the tonal balance as well.
  • Compressor Assistant - Achieve Intelligent parametrization with a single click of a mouse.
  • Next Level Sidechain - Sidechain mode that offers frequency-dependent ducking which will result in a much smoother mix.

Those are the main features, but the plugin offers something that I've never seen on any other compressor. The ability to only listen to the affected signal which helps you avoid guess work.

With this feature you'll be able to hear if your compressor settings are improving the audio signal or ruining it. Which is also a great way for beginners to learn how to compress audio and know EXACTLY what compression does to an audio signal. This is simply priceless, I never saw it coming.

You also get a visual presentation of the attack and release features. You can also play around with the shape of these 2 parameters to control how smooth or aggressive you want them to be.

One thing I didn't like about this plugin is that it's CPU Heavy and it will require a lot of RAM. So it requires a powerful machine.
